Any geek worth his salt will tell you the importance of the HEVC file format and how the benefits outweigh the minor drawbacks. Unfortunately, the HEVC/ H.265 compression standard is still emerging in the tech world and has just seen a major growth in its usage. The OnePlus 5 camera has been attributed to performing various tasks but sadly HEVC recording isn’t one of them.
For those not in the known, High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), also known as H.265, is a video compression standard aimed at providing twice the compression efficiency of its previous standard (H.264 / AVC) with minimal impact on the video itself. To put it simply, HEVC provides twice the compression (halves the data size/ bit rate) by sacrificing few inter-frame or intra-frame pixels, which are rarely visible to the naked eye on low-resolution devices.
Thankfully, XDA member pankajsammal was able to modify the OnePlus 5 to enable HEVC/H.265 video recording at 4k, 1080p & 720p resolutions along with a fairly reduced bit rate to ensure that your video takes significantly lower storage space.
